Description

For years, many North American hockey fans had a prejudice against foreign-born players. They felt that the European hockey players didn't like the physical type of game played in the NHL and couldn't stand the pounding of an 82-game schedule. However, several Europeans have dispelled this myth. Jaromir Jagr, who was born in Czechoslovakia, has done his share to prove that European players can both dish out and take hits---and score important goals as well.

At age 18, Jagr was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He immediately showed his value, helping the Penguins win a Stanley Cup and setting a rookie record for playoff scoring. In the next year, 1992, he and Mario Lemieux again powered the Pens to a championship.

In 1995, Jagr became the first European-born player to lead the league in scoring---and the first person not named Lemieux or Gretzky to win the title in 16 years. Although his teammate Lemieux has retired, Jagr continues to set records and score unbelievable goals.
